The proper motions of fundamental stars. I. 1535 stars from the Basic FK5 A direct combination of the positions given in the HIPPARCOS cataloguewith astrometric ground-based catalogues having epochs later than 1939allows us to obtain new proper motions for the 1535 stars of the BasicFK5. The results are presented as the catalogue Proper Motions ofFundamental Stars (PMFS), Part I. The median precision of the propermotions is 0.5 mas/year for mu alpha cos delta and 0.7mas/year for mu delta . The non-linear motions of thephotocentres of a few hundred astrometric binaries are separated intotheir linear and elliptic motions. Since the PMFS proper motions do notinclude the information given by the proper motions from othercatalogues (HIPPARCOS, FK5, FK6, etc.) this catalogue can be used as anindependent source of the proper motions of the fundamental stars.Catalogue (Table 3) is only available at the CDS via anonymous ftp tocdsarc.u-strasbg.fr (130.79.128.5) or viahttp://cdsweb.u-strastg.fr/cgi-bin/qcat?J/A+A/365/222

The Tokyo PMC catalog 90-93: Catalog of positions of 6649 stars observed in 1990 through 1993 with Tokyo photoelectric meridian circle The sixth annual catalog of the Tokyo Photoelectric Meridian Circle(PMC) is presented for 6649 stars which were observed at least two timesin January 1990 through March 1993. The mean positions of the starsobserved are given in the catalog at the corresponding mean epochs ofobservations of individual stars. The coordinates of the catalog arebased on the FK5 system, and referred to the equinox and equator ofJ2000.0. The mean local deviations of the observed positions from theFK5 catalog positions are constructed for the basic FK5 stars to comparewith those of the Tokyo PMC Catalog 89 and preliminary Hipparcos resultsof H30.

Classification and Identification of IRAS Sources with Low-Resolution Spectra IRAS low-resolution spectra were extracted for 11,224 IRAS sources. These spectra were classified into astrophysical classes, based on thepresence of emission and absorption features and on the shape of thecontinuum. Counterparts of these IRAS sources in existing optical andinfrared catalogs are identified, and their optical spectral types arelisted if they are known. The correlations between thephotospheric/optical and circumstellar/infrared classification arediscussed.

Photovisual Magnitude Differences for 169 Double Stars Photovisual magnitude differences determined from multi-exposurephotographic plates for 169 double stars are presented. The separationsrange from 1.5'' to 113\arcsec, and the photovisual magnitudedifferences vary from 0.03 to 6.14 magnitudes. The internal mean errorof a single magnitude difference estimate is +/-0.064 magnitude.

Mesures et decouvertes d'etoiles doubles effectuees a la lunette de 50cm de l'Observatoire de Nice. Measures and discoveries of visual double stars made with the 50cm refractor at the Nice Observatory. Measures and discoveries of visual double stars made at the Observatoirede la Cote d'Azur at Nice, between 1988 and 1994, with the 50cmrefractor equipped with a filar micrometer and electronic recordingdevice. The programs proposed by J. Dommanget involve the complement ofthe C.C.D.M. (resolving problems of identification of double stars andof coherency in the Index) and the INput CAtalog Hipparcos (resolutionof ambiguities on the binarity and on the position of certain doublestars which have seldom or never been observed again from the epoch ortheir discovery). The author has discovered three new binaries: JCT1,JCT2 and JCT3.

Vitesses radiales. Catalogue WEB: Wilson Evans Batten. Subtittle: Radial velocities: The Wilson-Evans-Batten catalogue. We give a common version of the two catalogues of Mean Radial Velocitiesby Wilson (1963) and Evans (1978) to which we have added the catalogueof spectroscopic binary systems (Batten et al. 1989). For each star, when possible, we give: 1) an acronym to enter SIMBAD (Set ofIdentifications Measurements and Bibliography for Astronomical Data) ofthe CDS (Centre de Donnees Astronomiques de Strasbourg). 2) the numberHIC of the HIPPARCOS catalogue (Turon 1992). 3) the CCDM number(Catalogue des Composantes des etoiles Doubles et Multiples) byDommanget & Nys (1994). For the cluster stars, a precise study hasbeen done, on the identificator numbers. Numerous remarks point out theproblems we have had to deal with.

Asymptotic giant branch stars near the sun Available red and near-infrared photometry and apparent motions of M, S,and C asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars in the Bright Star Catalogueare tabulated and discussed. It is shown that the red and near infraredindices normally used for late-type stars are interchangeable except forcarbon stars. The M-type giants are variable with visual amplitudegreater than 0.05 mag. The reddening-free parameter m2 from Genevaphotometry is essentially a temperature parameter for M giants, whilethe reddening-free parameter d is a sensitive detector of blue stellarcompanions. The space density of AGB stars near the sun decreases by afactor of 35 in a temperature range 3800 to 3400 K. Two of the S starsnear the sun were found to have nearly equal space motions and may becomembers of the Arcturus group.

On the (B-V) colors of the bright stars The possible causes of the dispersion of (B-V) colors of nearby stars inthe Bright Star Catalog are investigated. The distribution of (B-V)colors is presented for the entire range of spectral classes.Explanations for the dispersion in terms of a nonuniform distribution ofinterstellar absorbing material and a variability of metallicity areaddressed. A new statistical model for reddening by interstellar dustclouds is developed. It is concluded that extinction by nonuniforminterstellar matter is an important contribution to the reddening ofnearby stars, and that a part of the dispersion of (B-V) colors of Kand, possibly, M giants may be due to some unidentified variableproperty of those stars.

Narrow-band photometry of late-type stars. II This paper presents extensive narrow-band photometry in the Uppsalasystem supplementing earlier published mesurements so that data now areavailable for all late-type stars brighter than V = 6.05 and a number ofgalactic cluster members. Numerous UBV and BV measurements are alsopublished. The data are used to determine relations for the predictionof UBV intrinsic colors for late-type stars from the narrow-bandmeasurements. The main purpose of the data is to constitute the basisfor the determination of solar-neighborhood space densities of late-typestars, mainly giants of different kinds; these space densities will becombined with narrow-band data for fainter stars in the north Galacticpole region to yield the decrease of space density with distance fromthe galactic plane for many kinds of late-type stars.

Observations of right ascensions of selected FK4-stars concerning the magnitude equation Reduced observational materials on 141 stars are presented which wereused to investigate the possibility of a magnitude equation in thenorthern declination zone between 30 and 60 degrees of the FK4 catalog. Results are reported for the index number, FK4 number, magnitude, spectral type, number of observations per star, mean right ascension andmean declination, mean epoch of observations, mean residuals, and meansquare error of residuals. The stepwise multiple regression procedureused on the data base is discussed. No magnitude equation for the starswas detected.

Meridian observations made with the Carlsberg Automatic Meridian Circle at Brorfelde (Copenhagen University Observatory) 1981-1982 The 7-inch transit circle instrument with which the present position andmagnitude catalog for 1577 stars with visual magnitudes greater than11.0 was obtained had been equipped with a photoelectric moving slitmicrometer and a minicomputer to control the entire observationalprocess. Positions are reduced relative to the FK4 system for each nightover the whole meridian rather than the usual narrow zones. Thepositions of the FK4 stars used in the least squares solution are alsogiven in the catalog.

The circumstellar envelopes of M giants The average circumstellar envelopes of 61 red giants of spectral typesM0 through M7 are studied, and information is deduced concerning thevelocity structure in the envelopes as well as the mass-loss mechanism.Positions of red and blue edges of the circumstellar Ca II K4 profileare used to derive information on shell turbulent velocities andvelocity gradients within the envelopes. The results obtained indicatethat: (1) acceleration to a terminal velocity occurs extremely rapidlyor the mass-loss mechanism acts upon Ca III, which recombines only afterthe terminal velocity has been reached; (2) the turbulence must be lessthan 2 km/s in the shells of the M0 giants and should increase to avalue of at least 4 km/s for the M6 giants; (3) the observed broadeningof the K4 profile toward later spectral types must be due at least inpart to the increase in turbulence toward the later types; (4) shellexpansion begins well within the stellar chromospheres; and (5) themass-loss mechanism might involve supersonic winds rather than radiationpressure on grains.
